McFarlane Static: Trial by Fire (Gold Label) Figure Review

The latest Static figure from McFarlane Toys is a love letter to fans of Milestone Comics and a strong nod to Static’s earliest appearances. From the costume design to the overall silhouette, this release captures Static exactly as many of us remember him—right down to the classic visual cues that defined his original run. Longtime readers will immediately recognize how closely this figure mirrors Static’s very first look from his original run in the comics ( which are partially collected in the recently released DC Finest: Static – Playing with Fire ) which still remains one of the best entry points for the character.

Sculpt, Paint, and Accessories

Sculpt-wise, the figure looks fantastic on the shelf. Static’s proportions are spot-on, and the costume details feel faithful without being overworked. The included blast effects are solid and add some visual energy, though they’re more “serviceable” than show-stopping. One small nitpick: the trashcan lid accessory would have benefited from a darker wash to give it more depth and weathering.

Another minor miss is the lack of any kind of trench coat or raincoat accessory. Given how often Static is depicted with outerwear in key moments, this feels like a missed opportunity that could have elevated the figure from great to exceptional.

Articulation and Posing

As expected from a McFarlane DC Multiverse release, articulation is a bit limited. The absence of a thigh swivel in particular restricts posing options, and many of Static’s more iconic airborne or dynamic stances are difficult—if not impossible—to pull off. This is less a flaw unique to this figure and more a known limitation of the line, but it’s still worth noting for pose-focused collectors.

Final Thoughts

Despite a few small nitpicks, the Static: Trial by Fire figure is an excellent figure and one I’m genuinely thrilled to have in my collection. It nails the character’s classic look, represents Milestone Comics with care, and stands out nicely among modern DC releases. Here’s hoping this isn’t the end of McFarlane’s Milestone efforts—because a Hardware figure feels like the obvious (and very welcome) next step.
