Review: DCeased Omnibus by Tom Taylor

dceased omnibus cover

When I first heard about the premise of DCeased, I was immediately dismissive. A zombie outbreak in the DC Universe? How would that even work? Why would it make sense? Sure, you had the amazing Tom Taylor — who absolutely killed it with Injustice — writing it, but that alone couldn’t possibly save it, right?

Boy, was I ever wrong.

DCeased turned out to be one of my absolute favorite modern DC projects. It’s not just gore and violence for cheap shock value — every death hits hard. The tension is palpable from page one. You never know who will fall next, or if humanity itself will make it out alive. There are several powerful character moments throughout the saga, and I found myself hooked from start to finish.

And now, with the release of the DCeased Omnibus, we finally have this gripping superhero survival horror experience collected in one massive, beautifully assembled volume.

Overview / Packaging

Clocking in at over 1,040 pages, the DCeased Omnibus brings together every chapter of this apocalyptic saga — from the original six-issue miniseries all the way to War of the Undead Gods. Retailing at $125, it’s an absolute brick of a book, and one of DC’s most impressive omnibus releases to date.

The front cover perfectly sets the tone with the infected DC Trinity — Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman — their faces twisted in horrifying detail. The back cover continues the grim mood, showing the two icons battling hordes of the infected with a brief series synopsis.

Under the dust jacket, collectors are treated to a striking wraparound design: Batman and Superman locked in battle on one side, DC villains fighting for survival on the other, and a zombified Joker glaring from the spine. Inside, you’ll find a blood-splattered title page, a cleanly laid-out table of contents, and a heartfelt introduction from Tom Taylor himself. The binding is sewn, and the glossy paper stock really makes the artwork pop.

Story & Art

The brilliance of DCeased lies in how Tom Taylor takes what could have been a gimmick — “DC does zombies” — and transforms it into a deeply emotional, tightly constructed story about loss, hope, and sacrifice.

The anti-life virus spreads through technology itself, weaponizing our modern anxieties in a way that feels both clever and unsettling. Anyone who looks at their device becomes infected — an eerie, modern twist on the zombie formula.

What truly sets DCeased apart, though, is its emotional weight. Taylor doesn’t rely on shock value. Each death has impact. The relationships — especially between Superman, Batman, and their children — hit hard. The Unkillables miniseries, for instance, flips the lens to the villains, showing characters like Deathstroke, Jason Todd, and Bane risking everything to protect a group of orphaned children. It’s raw, heartfelt storytelling that humanizes even the darkest corners of the DCU.

Taylor’s world-building continues in Hope at World’s End (a digital anthology full of smaller-scale survival stories) and Dead Planet, which fast-forwards years later to show a new generation of heroes reclaiming Earth. By the time you reach War of the Undead Gods, the scale has gone cosmic — the infection spreading beyond Earth to the stars — but Taylor somehow keeps the heart of the story intact.

Artists Trevor Hairsine, Karl Mostert, and others bring Taylor’s scripts to life with visceral, cinematic energy. The grotesque details of the infected are balanced by stunning emotional close-ups and heroic splash pages. You can feel the weight of every decision, every sacrifice.

Bonus Content / Extras

The DCeased Omnibus doesn’t skimp on extras. You’re getting over 150 pages of bonus material, including:

  • Dozens of variant covers (some previously hard to find)
  • Character sketches and early concept designs
  • A portion of the original script
  • Panel layouts and page breakdowns showing the creative process
  • A touching tribute to Karl Mostert, one of the artists behind the series

It’s a treasure trove for fans and collectors alike.

Final Verdict

The DCeased Omnibus is one of the best modern DC collections you can own. It’s smart, emotional, action-packed, and surprisingly hopeful — all while delivering some of the most gripping superhero horror ever put to page.

If you loved Injustice, enjoy Elseworld stories, or just want a self-contained DC saga with heart and guts (literally), this is a must-have addition to your shelf.

Hobby Haul Verdict: 9.5/10
💀 A brutal, beautiful epic that proves hope can survive even the end of the world.
