GI Joe Classified Grim Viper — Review

grim viper with gattling gun

The Range Vipers have been some of the strongest troop builders in the entire Classified line, so anytime Hasbro gives us another variation, it’s an easy win for collectors. The Grim Viper continues that tradition—a menacing, wilderness-themed reimagining that feels right at home beside the other Cobra specialists.

Design & Concept

Conceptually, this character is positioned as a jungle or wilderness specialist, blending the DNA of previous troop types—almost like what you’d get if a Range Viper and Saw Viper merged into one. While I would still love to see a proper re-release of the original Classified Range Viper with upgraded weapons, the Grim Viper brings enough personality to stand on its own.

The skull mask is easily the standout feature: glowing yellow-orange eyes, exaggerated teeth, and that iconic “brain-helmet” sculpt that gives the entire figure an eerie, predatory look. The Saw Viper vest, along with brown Cobra Viper arm guards, combines well with the dark green and camo paintwork. The bare-arm sculpt sleeveless aesthetic—adds a gritty, almost predatory edge.

Accessories

As expected, most of the gear is reuse, but the deco choices help pull everything together:

  • Gatling Gun: A familiar Classified weapon, previously seen with Breaker’s RAM cycle and Heavy Artillery Roadblock. While I personally would’ve preferred a different heavy weapon, the flame detailing, battle damage, and  tally marks version feel slightly unique.
  • Pistol: Small sidearm with an extended magazine and blast effect port
  • Knives: Two included—one larger silver-bladed knife and a slim, serrated black knife. Each has its own sheath on the figure, including a drop-leg setup.
  • Backpack: The classic Range Viper pack returns in a new green deco with gold rounds and molded oxygen canister.

Articulation

Articulation is strong overall, though the Saw Viper vest naturally limits neck and ab crunch range a bit. Everything else is standard Classified excellence: drop-down hips, pinless double elbows and knees, boot cut, wrist swivel, and great posing range. The figure equips and stores all its gear cleanly thanks to its multiple sheaths and holster.

Final Thoughts

Despite going in with tempered expectations—especially since this figure leans heavily on reuse—I ended up liking the Grim Viper far more than I anticipated. The mask design, paintwork, and wilderness-trooper aesthetic all come together to create something that feels fresh, intimidating, and extremely display-friendly.

Would a new heavy weapon have been nice? Absolutely. But even with familiar parts, the Grim Viper still adds meaningful variety to the Cobra ranks. A solid troop builder, a cool officer-type option, and a welcome addition to the Classified line.
